Using the Web Soil Survey for Your Needs

This presentation is for current Web Soil Survey (WSS) users interested in advancing their skills in using the platform to inform resource management. A brief overview of the app will be given, but prior knowledge and familiarity using WSS is assumed. You will learn how to use the program to find out what soils are in your area of interest and how to access soil interpretations and property data using the Soil Data Explorer to better understand if your area is suited to your specific needs. David will give a short introduction to the WSS and then respond to questions you may have on how to use the WSS for your needs.

Target audiences include: Conservation Commissions, Town Planners, Agricultural Commissions, Planning Boards, Famers, and Consultants. Please share with those interested in attending.

David Zimmerman’s Bio:

Dave Zimmermann is a certified professional soil scientist with over 20 years of experience working in natural resources for federal agencies. He is currently the acting State Soil Scientist for NRCS in Massachusetts and Vermont. In that role he leads the soils program for NRCS in those states assisting NRCS staff, customers, and partners with understanding and interpreting soils for the planning and implementation of conservation practices and land management as well as conducting wetland determinations. Past soil scientist roles with the agency include working in soil survey field offices mapping soils in Nevada, Minnesota, North Dakota, and northern California as well as in a regional office providing technical oversite and leadership to several soil survey offices across the Northeast Region.
