CRAFT Farm Visit: Tractor Safety
June 2, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
What does that lever do? When should I use the differential lock? Why shouldn’t I touch the PTO while it’s running? Why, exactly, is there a seat belt on a tractor? Can a tractor really roll over on me? What can high-pressured hydraulic fluid do to me? If I side start a tractor, will I die?
If you can’t answer these questions, perhaps come to the Tractor Safety CRAFT at Farmer Tim’s! The discussion will be led by Brian Huckins, tractor guru, tinker and smith, and master of what not to do on a tractor. Without demonstrating the bad safety habits, Brian will talk about the best ways to keep you and others safe as you operate a tractor. He’ll cover the layout of a tractor – all the knobs and do-dads, how not to flip over, proper usage, and general good operator habits.
Farmer Tim’s is a small vegetable production farm located on a historic piece of farmland in Dudley, MA. In 2015 owner Tim Carroll began converting the old pasture land for vegetable production and started selling his vegetables at a weekly pop-up farm stand in his hometown in Belmont, MA. In 2018 Farmer Tim’s hired a full time Farm Manager, Katie Bekel, and expanded production to fulfill a 100 member CSA, two weekly farmers markets, an on-site farm stand, and restaurant sales. Our CSA includes both a boxed CSA share option at two locations and an on-farm choice style CSA.
