Medway Community Farm Hiring Assistant Farm Manager

December 28, 2019

The MCF main farm site overlooking the Chicken Brook.

Medway Community Farm Inc., is a non-profit farm on town-owned land in Medway, Massachusetts with 7 acres in vegetable production spread over three close range sites. MCF uses non-certified organic methods to manage a diverse vegetable operation that produces food for CSA programs, an on-site farm stand, local farmers markets, wholesale accounts, and local food pantry donations. We offer a variety of education programs, community events, and volunteer opportunities for the public.

Medway Community Farm seeks a motivated Assistant Farm Manager with a minimum of 2 seasons of experience to assist in all aspects of farm management.

Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with the Farm Manager in all aspects of managing the farm. Vegetable production, field work, and crew management are all key components of the position. He/she/they will train crew members and lead field work, projects, and general workflow; assist in organizing and managing harvests, local farmers markets, weekly planning, and volunteers; and have to think creatively while troubleshooting irrigation, crop issues, machinery malfunctions, etc. The Assistant Manager will also help to bring about a cohesive and jovial feeling to the crew and day-to-day work.

The right candidate will be able to work closely with the Farm Manager, Assistant Growers, and Summer Crew to meet 2020 goals. The right candidate will be dedicated to production efficiency and product quality, while maintaining a positive and inclusive work environment. There is opportunity for growth and increased responsibility within the organization.

Qualifications

Have 2 or 3 seasons of farming with a good sense of humor and easy-going nature, matched with a good work ethic. A year or more of safe tractor and machine operation would be great but a desire for tractor work is a must. Any other areas of management such as greenhouse management skills, crop planning, pest scouting and management, etc. would be awesome but not a requirement. Be good problem solver with an eye for detail, e.g. noticing improperly washed veggies on the truck for market. A strong desire for collaboration, learning, and an eagerness to interact with the different circles of people on the farm is essential. And of course, have the endurance, strength, and sense of humor to make it through the season!

The Assistant Manager should be excited about working with community members of all backgrounds and ages to promote the farm’s mission. We strive to balance the high demands on our operations while integrating education, volunteerism and activism, while taking time to enjoy what we do.

Schedule

This is a full-time seasonal position starting February or March and ending in November or December, estimated at around 30 hours a week from February to March, 40-50 hours a week from April to October, and back down again for our winter season. The workday begins at 8 am during the slower season and 6-7 am when we’re in the thick of it.

Compensation

Competitive salary commensurate with experience with lots of produce, blueberries, eggs from the chickens, and professional development opportunities through bi-weekly CRAFT events.

Note: housing is not available at this time, but we are happy to work with prospective candidates to help secure housing.
