A little bit about Young Farmer Network…The Young Farmer Network of Southeastern New England is focused on strengthening resiliency of local farms in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. We facilitate events and workshops where farmers can foster direct relationships, build community, and share skills that create a stronger food system. Our programs prioritize hiring growers as teachers, paying growers to host Young Farmer Nights, and fostering connection through sharing knowledge between the generations. This means the majority of the money we budget for in our organization goes back into the hands of our farmers. This fundraiser will help us sustain our mission and get more programs, classes, and community events into our farming community.
So why the theme Procession of the Species?
In Bellingham and Olympia Washington there is an annual parade that ties in this theme. The streets are flooded with folks in different nature inspired costumes to emphasize our relationship to the natural world. This theme felt fitting for our farming community, where these relationships are becoming more important to protect as our environment changes. Where our relationship with each other as humans is an extension of our relationship to the natural world. This theme is an all encompassing celebration.

Procession of the Species: Tis’ the season for dressing up, so maybe you have something lying around for this theme. We are encouraging folks to dress up in your best “species” costume to celebrate the ecology that makes up our farm fields. This could be an animal, insect, plant, or organism! Maybe you’ve been holding off on your potato beetle costume or have been wanting to make a pair of bird wings and just never had the occasion. This is your time to do it. There will be music throughout the event and plenty of space to dance around!
