2017 MCF Assistant Grower Job Description
Medway Community Farm Inc, is a non-profit farm on town-land in Medway, Massachusetts with 6 acres in vegetable production spread over three close range sites. MCF uses non-certified organic methods, to manage a diverse vegetable operation that produces food for a mid sized Spring (110), Summer (250) and Fall (130) CSA, an on-site farm stand, one local farmer’s market and restaurant, and local food pantry donation. We offer a variety of education programs, community events and volunteer opportunities for the public.
Medway Community Farm, Inc, is seeking 2 motivated individuals who believe farming may be in their future.
Position Duration: mid-March/April – October/November depending on availability. Monday-Friday (the weekly grind, 7am – 4pm (schedule will vary slightly seasonally) 10:00am 20 minute paid union coffee break, 1 hour unpaid lunch. (A more part time/flexible hours position may be possible for the right candidate)
Responsibilities: The Assistant Grower, working closely with the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager, will assist in all aspects of vegetable production including greenhouse management, planting, cultivation, irrigation management, harvest, washing, packing and direct sales. We are looking for someone who enjoys fast paced, efficient work, is flexible, passionate, works well alone and with a group and who is a good communicator. S/he must have the ability and interest to work long hours outside in any type of weather. Qualified candidates must be able to safely lift and carry 50 lbs and have a valid driver’s license. Previous experience farming, as a teacher, outdoor educator, community organizer or other relevant positions a plus, but not necessary. The right candidate should be excited about working with community members of all backgrounds and ages to promote the farm’s mission. We strive to balance the high demands on our operations while integrating education, volunteerism and activism, and taking time to enjoy what we do.
Compensation: $11-12/hr (depending on experience) for 40 hrs a week from April to October, produce from the farm, participation in EMass CRAFT, and hands on training sessions. Currently there is no housing available, but we are willing to work with the right candidate to find housing solutions in our community.
